Be wildfire aware

23rd Mar 2022

British Summertime is officially with us, and when the sun shines the uplands attract many visitors to their open spaces.

The vast majority of those who enjoy the countryside do so responsibly and take their litter home with them. Litter not only spoils the landscape but is often a direct threat to curious creatures who become entangled or trapped in items carelessly discarded.

Glass items present an even great risk, that of wildfire. Refracted sunbeams onto dry mosses or other dried vegetative debris can start a fire quickly, that can easily devastate vast areas of uplands, destroying flora and fauna and releasing particulate that pollutes and carbon that may never be recovered.

Similarly, barbecue coals thought to have been doused before discarded (aluminum tray taken home) may nevertheless retain a smouldering spark that ignites and wreaks similar havoc.

A little bit of thought will avoid unintentional harm.

Far worse, however, are the very small number who deliberately set fire to open spaces, just because they can. The intent, or indifference, towards destruction of our wonderful landscape is unimaginable to anyone else. Nevertheless, this happens.

If anyone knows anything about anyone that would identify someone who sets out to destroy our landscape, the Durham Fire Service has a confidential phone line to report what you know.
