We have been delighted to conduct annual bird monitoring, and looking forward to our tenth report in 2026. We are equally pleased that in the coming year we will be exploring the potential of technology to monitor birdlife on the uplands.

Living Uplands has teamed up with the Biosciences Department of Durham University as part of a wider PhD programme that is looking at automated acoustic monitoring of bird species.

Apps on phones can be useful for a quick check on what birds might be nearby. An academic enquiry will look at a much broader scale capture of bird data based on the same idea – a snapshot of bird song which can be then identified. More recent technology promises to be able to identify the range and number of any species in a given area.

The involvement of Living Uplands will begin in Spring 2026. Already looking forward to learning what is heard and reporting here on this news feed.
